  1. INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this procedure is to define the general workmanship requirements for all covered yarns. Covered yarn typically consists of a spandex core with textured yarn twisted around it or air entangled. These requirements are referenced by individual product specifications or procedures, which may also note exceptions and physical properties. Uncontrolled copy.

  2. SPECIFICATION

    1. Dirt/Grease– No soiling or grease spots allowed. It is acceptable if the spots can be cleaned off. For dirt on the outside surface – air strip yarn to waste. For dirt on the ends – clean with sprayer (or for F oil packages, ball of F oil yarn.). If dirt does not come off, reject to off grade.
    2. Wound in waste – None allowed. Strip if possible to correct. Otherwise reject to rewind.
    3. Damaged/bumped – None allowed. Strip if possible to correct. Otherwise reject to rewind.
    4. F-Oil Contamination – F-oil contamination is acceptable.
    5. Texture color/appearance – No overly shiny or dull yarn allowed. Dull, bright, dye color, etc. per limit samples. Shiny appearance may indicate missing cover yarn. For colored yarn, write the color on the outside of the box.
    6. Fluorescent Oil- If applicable, there needs to be even coverage when viewed under a blacklight. Low F oil can be evaluated according to limit sample.
    7. Crossed Ends- Nose end crosses are allowed, unless they appear matted or too numerous to count. Up to two 1 inch crosses on the tail end are allowed or crosses < ¼" from the tube are allowed. If crossed ends cannot be easily corrected by realigning yarn, reject to rewind.
    8. Slubs/Loops/Kinks – None allowed.
    9. Proper Wind- No patterns or bands. No high or falling off edges. No excessive hard/soft packages.
Single and Double covered yarn should run off package freely.
    10. Tube Defects- No crushed, nicked, or cut tubes, especially on the nose end.
    11. Ridges/Grooves- No ridges or grooves > 1/8 inch high or deep.
    12. Uniformity - Covered yarn should be uniform.
    13. Air entanglement –For air covered yarn only, check for consistent air entanglement. If not entangled, run off as waste if possible, or else send back to rewind on air cover machine.
    14. Twist –for single cover yarn, Z twist must rotate counter-clockwise when allowed to relax and S twist rotates clockwise. Double cover should have little or no twist. If the twist is slow the yarn is o.k. Fast twist may indicate missing end. If the twist kinks, the bad yarn needs to be run off as waste.
    15. Latching – Filaments or plies that separate when winding off package are not allowed.
    16. Slippage – Either yarn should not kink or retract more than the other when stretched and relaxed.
    17. Missing end – Hand check for missing or broken yarn. Check that both nylon and spandex are present. Reject to off grade.
    18. No tail - Single Cover - can be packed with three no-tail packages per case. Double Cover and air cover – only one no-tail per case is allowed. If excess no tail packages are found then reject to rewind. The minimum tail length is 1 wrap around the tube.
    19. Multiple tails - If there are multiple tails, then correct if possible. Otherwise reject to rewind.
    20. Tail clearance – tail should be clear of package at least 1/4 inch.
    21. Oversize or Small package – Size is not critical covered yarn.
    22. Packaging - Yarn packages are bagged with high density vented poly bags and packed into box, tail end down, so there is as little movement as possible. Packages are not forced into the box. Box goes on conveyor to scale open with flaps taped down and inspector card GF007 placed in one of the tubes on top. The proper box is determined as follows:

        11.4" tube Sapona #211 box, #1 pad

        10-1/4 " tube Sapona #210 box, #1 pad

Plastic Tube Y Box, two #1 pads

Lots ending with P Plain box, #210, #211, or Y box

All boxes are 350 psi corrugated and may be reused or recycled.

All box bottoms are taped with 72mm, clear acrylic tape, and strapped shut with plastic strap.

    23. Weighing – Yarn is weighed per procedure COVSOP0077 as is with no allowance for moisture regain or finish. The case is weighed to determine gross weight. The net weight is calculated based on number of tubes and standard tare weight of all packaging materials.

    24. Case Labeling – Cases are labeled and individually numbered with computer transfer printed, stick on, three part label SHIPF014. In addition, each case has tube label SHIPF015 and shipping label SHIPF019. Labels have an important warning that if the Lot number on the container differs from previous shipments, keep separate unless your test prove this unnecessary.

      Guarantee/Disclaimers

    25. Sapona does not guarantee the dyeability of nylon products under 70 denier in multi-feed circular knit, warp knit or woven fabric applications. Sapona only guarantees that the yarns are properly assembled. It is up to the customer to determine the suitability of these fine denier yarns in non-hosiery applications.

    26. Dupont 70/46 Tactel is not guaranteed for dyeability.
    27. Sapona does not guarantee mid-denier yarns dyed with rate sensitive acid dyes. Critical shades and shades with high wet fastness are likely to exhibit dye rate sensitivities. Rate sensitive dyes also include direct or neutral dyeing and premetallized classes.
    28. Yarn should be at least 3 days old before use and not more than 1 year old for critical applications.
